One of the primary advantages of spray tanning is its ability to provide a golden tan without exposing your skin to harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. UV radiation from the sun and tanning beds can lead to premature aging, sunburn, and an increased risk of skin cancer. Spray tanning offers a UV-free alternative, allowing you to achieve that coveted sun-kissed look without compromising your skin's health.
A spray tan typically lasts about 5 to 10 days, with most people seeing their best results between days 2 and 4 before it starts to fade.
Key factors affecting longevity
- Skin type: Oily skin tends to hold the tan longer than dry skin, which sheds faster
- Shade and DHA content: Darker shades with more dihydroxyacetone (DHA) last longer — up to 10 days — while lighter shades may fade in 5–7 days
- Preparation: Exfoliating 24 hours before the tan removes dead skin cells that cause patchiness and helps the tan develop evenly
- Aftercare: Moisturizing twice daily, avoiding hot showers, chlorine, heavy sweating, and oil-based products can extend the tan’s life
- Skin cell turnover: The outer layer of skin sheds every 5–7 days, so the tan fades naturally with it
Exfoliation is crucial for a smooth, streak-free tan. Start 3–5 days before your appointment by gently removing dead skin cells using a dry brush, exfoliating mitt, or body scrub. Focus on drier areas like elbows, knees, ankles, and wrists, as these spots tend to absorb more tanning solution and can appear darker if not properly prepped. Avoid oil-based scrubs, as oils can create a barrier that prevents the solution from adhering evenly. Stop exfoliating about 8–24 hours before your session to allow your skin to stabilize. Shaving should be done 12 hours before your spray tan. Streaks may be an issue in your final tan if you shave right before due to the wax from the shaving bar. Manicures, pedicures, and waxing should all be done a few days prior to your spray tan. Make sure to bring loose fitting clothes and towel for your car with you for after your session.
